There are some spoilers for BOS.
I really shouldn’t be writing this right now because I have about five stories for other fandoms that I should be trying to update. But I’m having problems getting inspiration, and seeing as I saw Book of Secrets yesterday I just had to write these drabbles. Hope they are okay because I don’t usually write drabbles. And if any of the details are slightly wrong then I must apologise, but I’ve only seen the movie once so…
One
There are four of them trying to keep the thing balanced, but that doesn’t matter. All that matters is that Ben’s there, and it scares him so much, telling them that he’ll stay, but he’ll do it, for Ben. Ben, who gives him a look full of gratitude, then turns back to Abby. He knows it’s wrong, but he wishes it was Abigail staying, wishes it was himself that Ben looked at with so much love in his eyes. But Abigail disappears up the ladder, and the two of them are left.
Then the thing – he’s not even sure what it is, Ben probably knows – begins to crumble, and Ben urges him forward. He hesitates only for a second, and then runs. Hanging off the ladder there’s only one person he can think of, and it’s not himself, he turns, sees Ben run then jump and somehow he catches him. Standing on the rock ledge watching Ben and Abby embrace he can’t help but think that if he and Ben hadn’t of made it; at least they would have died together.
Two
He knows, the second he sees Ben sitting on the steps. Ben needs his help, and he wants to say no, because where was Ben when he was struggling to get his book finished, where was Ben at his book launch. But he still says yes. Because he can never deny that look on Ben’s face, even if he knows that at the end of it all Ben and Abby will get back together, and he’ll be left alone, again.
Three
He watches as Riley taps away on his computer, wondering what the younger man is doing – certainly not something to do with treasure, because they had found the City of Gold. He smiled slightly, thinking that only Riley could be on his laptop at a party hosted by the President in honour of the six people who had found the City. The smile turns into a frown when Riley slams the top of his laptop down, picks it up and stomps over to the open bar.
He wonders what could be wrong, and then watches as Riley guzzles on a beer, he can’t help thinking that he wishes Riley’s mouth were on something else. Then Abby comes up behind him and whispers in his ear. And he turns away from watching the one he does love to the one that he knows he should.
